The Sacramento Kings walked out of Orlando with a 109-107 victory over the Magic on March 16, a win they absolutely needed. Domantas Sabonis was a beast, putting up 21 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists. That's his 47th consecutive double-double, a new franchise record. He just keeps piling up the numbers. De'Aaron Fox, as usual, led the scoring with 31 points, including a clutch pull-up jumper with 26 seconds left that ultimately sealed it.

But let's be real. This game shouldn't have been that close. The Kings shot 47.7% from the field and actually held a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter. They let the Magic, who shot a measly 40.2%, hang around far too long. Paolo Banchero had a good night with 22 points and 7 assists, but he also went just 8-for-20 from the floor. Orlando missed 28 three-pointers. Sacramento should have put them away much earlier.

The Sabonis Engine Keeps Running

Sabonis is playing at an All-NBA level, plain and simple. Those 14 boards against Orlando were crucial, especially given how many second-chance opportunities the Magic were trying to create. He consistently outworks opponents in the paint. His passing, too, is what makes this Kings offense hum. Eight assists from your center? That’s gold. He's averaging 19.9 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists in March alone. Those are ridiculous numbers.

Fox, on the other hand, was a bit of a mixed bag. He scored his 31 points efficiently, going 12-for-21. But his decision-making in the fourth quarter, when Orlando was making their run, felt a little rushed at times. He turned the ball over 4 times in the game. You need your star point guard to slow things down and control the tempo when the other team is gaining momentum. He didn't quite do that consistently enough.

Where's the Consistency?

This is the frustrating part about these Kings. One night they look like world-beaters, the next they're struggling against a team they should handle. Against the Magic, they allowed Orlando to chip away at that fourth-quarter lead with too many defensive lapses. Franz Wagner, who finished with 18 points, got to the rim far too easily on a few possessions late. The Kings' defensive rating has hovered around the middle of the league all season, and games like this show why. They can't consistently lock down.

Keegan Murray only had 10 points on 4-for-11 shooting. Harrison Barnes added 13, but neither really asserted themselves when the Kings needed a steady offensive presence beyond Fox and Sabonis. Malik Monk, off the bench, chipped in 12 points, but his shot was off, going 4-for-13. This team needs more reliable secondary scoring.

Playoff Picture Worries

The win pushed Sacramento to 38-28, keeping them firmly in the Western Conference playoff hunt, currently sitting sixth. But the Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder are still ahead, and the Dallas Mavericks are right on their heels. Every game matters. Getting a win on the road is always good, but the manner in which they almost squandered this one against a sub-.500 Magic team is concerning. They need to learn how to put teams away.

Here's my hot take: If the Kings don't figure out their fourth-quarter execution and defensive focus, they'll be in the play-in tournament, not a guaranteed playoff spot. They've got a tough stretch ahead with games against the Celtics and Raptors coming up.
